RACGP officially endorses Aussie doctor’s antidepressant deprescribing guidelines

Author Dr Mark Horowitz says his own experience with antidepressant weaning was 'the most hellish experience' of his life.

New deprescribing guidelines from an Australian-born doctor who battled antidepressant withdrawal symptoms have become the latest RACGP-backed clinical resource.

Dr Mark Horowitz published The Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines — which cover antidepressants, benzodiazepines, gabapentinoids and Z-drugs — in January after taking years to wean himself off escitalopram.

He told AusDoc that his first attempt to stop taking antidepressants over four months was “the most hellish period” of his life and caused him to quit his job.

“I ended up going back on the drug and moved from London back to my family home in Sydney because I was so shattered by the process,” he said.
