RANZCOG eyes splitting obstetrics and gynaecology into two specialties
Limited training opportunities for gynaecological surgery have creating a registrar bottleneck, Dr Nisha Khot says.
RANZCOG is in the early stages of potentially separating obstetrics and gynaecology as specialties, the college president says.
Dr Nisha Khot says RANZCOG has three times more applicants than training posts, which are limited by access to gynaecological surgical training at a time when gynaecological surgeries are declining.
This has created a training bottleneck when Australia desperately needs more obstetricians, with 18 private maternity units forced to close since 2018, Dr Khot tells AusDoc.
“It has been a discussion for the last 30 years at least, but now we are seeing a change in how we manage gynaecology … and the type of specialists we need.”
