One of three men who gunned down a “kind and gentle” GP during an attempted robbery will be eligible for release in a fortnight after being sentenced to a non-parole period of less than three years.

Dr Luping Zeng was packing his car with the garage door open when he was shot outside his Brisbane home in April 2019.

It was just before midnight when he was confronted by two men and a teenager, who can’t be identified, who were planning to steal his car.

Joshua Hamilton, now 21, was holding a baseball bat, Billy Smith, 22, had a machete and the 17-year-old had a shotgun, which he fired at the GP.
