Rural GP Dr Richard Mayes loved being the most devoted, caring and available doctor he possible could be for his community in central Victoria. But he was forced to leave when his commitment to his patients started coming at the expense of his family and mental wellbeing.

His journey back was a long and complicated one — involving an unusual new hobby. Now, he is sharing his story to help other doctors hoping to conquer burnout and master their own sense of compassion.

The following is an excerpt from Beyond the Stethoscope – Doctors stories of reclaiming hope, heart and healing in medicine.

I really struggle to put this story out there. My patients rely on me to be strong, invincible, perfect. None of them would have any idea that I’ve had some really dark moments through burnout. My family wouldn’t even know.
