Registered nurses a step closer to prescribing as courses start at 5 universities 

Programs offer pathophysiology, health assessment and diagnostic testing to prepare nurses for writing scripts.

Hundreds of RNs are taking their first steps towards prescribing medications, with five universities now promoting accredited nurse prescribing courses. 

The latest of these, announced by Edith Cowan University this week, is a one-year online program with 100 places starting in July.

Under the framework adopted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, RNs will be free to prescribe S4 and S8 medications under formal written agreements with doctors or nurse practitioners.

It followed the landmark decision by health ministers back in 2024 to support RN prescribing following a decade of campaigning.
