Registrars say uncertainty over GP training is adding to sky-high stress levels

Hundreds of registrars are about to sit their fellowship exams as the Federal Government declares it is rethinking the GP training model

Registrars say the uncertainty, gossip and rumours about the Federal Government’s intentions for GP training are fuelling their high stress levels just days away from their fellowship exams.

Last week Federal health officials sent GP supervisors, medical educators and training organisations into a tailspin after they announced they were rethinking details of the transition to college-led training.

The handover to the RACGP and ACRRM of the $200 million a year training program is still scheduled for 2022, although the health department is now exploring a different operational model designed to ensure more GPs are working in areas of need.

The GPRA says it remains unclear to the current cohort of 5,400 GP registrars what the new model could look like or the reasons for the sudden shift in plans.
