Renowned AFL concussion doctor faces Medical Board of Australia investigation

Associate Professor Paul McCrory has been accused of plagiarism and breaching a Medical Board of Australia undertaking

The Medical Board of Australia and the AFL have launched separate investigations into world-renowned concussion expert Associate Professor Paul McCrory.

A longstanding adviser to the league, Professor McCrory came under scrutiny last month when it emerged he had plagiarised another researcher’s work while editor-in-chief of a BMJ journal.

Soon after, claims surfaced that the neurologist and sports physician had been treating former AFL players for concussions without telling them he had restrictions on his medical registration preventing him from performing neurodiagnostic procedures, nerve conduction studies or electromyography.

NewsCorp alleged five former AFL players had been advised on concussion recovery and treatment by Professor McCrory, including former West Coast player Daniel Venables, who was allegedly prescribed antidepressants for migraines.
