Rescue surfer from shark attack, head home, hang out washing, start hospital shift: Dr Kurt Durbridge on his unusual day
The emergency doctor went to work hours after he saved the life of a man savaged by a shark.
“I feel like I’ve been involved with probably the most significant experience of my life. I couldn’t imagine if we had had to hold his hand or something if he had died.”
Dr Kurt Durbridge is describing the morning he helped save a surfer who had been dragged from the water after being savaged by a great white shark at a Port Macquarie beach on the NSW mid-north coast.
Dr Durbridge, in the final stages of his emergency training, was one of the first people to get to the surfer, Toby Begg, who is recovering at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, following multiple surgeries after the attack.
His account posted on his Facebook page made headlines.
