Restrict MBS care plan cash to enrolled patients: AMA

The AMA wants governments to 'support GPs who are truly the patient’s usual GP'
Professor Steve Robson.

Only patients registered with their GP would be eligible for MBS-funded chronic disease care plans under the AMA’s vision for patient enrolment.

It has called for a federal enrolment scheme that protects MBS items for care plans, health assessments and medication reviews from “potential misuse”.

This would save the Federal Government $225 million over four years, the AMA calculated.

“GPs will be only able to claim these items for enrolled patients, noting that there would need to be some flexibility for vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations and a sufficient period for transition,” it said as it laid out its proposal ahead of May’s federal budget.
