Retired doctors thanked for offering their services during pandemic

A special register of thousands of retired doctors has wound up, one year after it opened to bolster the medical workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some 4,800 doctors who had dropped off AHPRA’s register in the previous three years were automatically reregistered last April, unless they were under investigation or had conditions on their registration when it lapsed.
More than 3,350 of these agreed to remain on the “pandemic sub-register”, along with over 31,000 practitioners from other health professions.
AHPRA CEO Martin Fletcher said the sub-register for doctors was closed on Monday as a surge medical workforce was no longer required.
