Revealed: The medical schools most (and least) likely to make future GPs
Landmark analysis by the GP college presidents reveals the medical schools that stand up for general practice, with James Cook University leading the way.
They compared the alma mater of registrars who started GP training in 2025 with the average number of medical graduates from 21 universities over 2019-2023 to estimate the proportion of students from each university pursuing a GP career.
The graduates most likely to choose general practice, including rural generalism, were those from James Cook University and the University of Notre Dame’s Perth campus — more than 50% of graduates at both.
The University of Queensland and Monash University ranked highest in raw numbers, each contributing more than 100 GP registrars to the 2025 cohort.
