As if routine dental cleanings weren’t tortuous enough, doctors are warning that a dental clean may predispose healthy patients to serious infection.

This comes after a young man developed liver abscesses and septic shock following the procedure.

The immunocompetent 21-year-old was admitted to the William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, US, with a three-week history of intermittent fever up to 40ºC, fatigue and right upper-quadrant abdominal pain.

Two days prior to admission, the patient said the abdominal pain had been stabbing, prompting him to seek medical help, doctors wrote in BMJ Case Reports.
