RSV vaccine ‘75% effective’ in keeping elderly patients out of hospital: real-world study

The US CDC has looked at what happened during the first season when the vaccine was available.

Elderly patients with respiratory syncytial virus are less likely to be hospitalised if they are vaccinated, the first US post-marketing study shows.

The real-world data show that vaccination had at least 75% effectiveness against hospitalisation among over-60s, including those older than 75.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers who conducted the case-control study said that pre-licensure trials were not powered to demonstrate efficacy against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalisation.

Their study, published as a research letter in JAMA, therefore provided the first evidence that the vaccine may keep infected patients out of hospital.
