Rural general practice is ‘different, not better’ than metro: ACRRM on securing subspecialty recognition
This week, Australia’s rural doctors are celebrating.
Almost 30 years since a rebel group of GPs quit the RACGP and founded ACRRM in pursuit of a better deal for rural generalism, the field has been formally recognised as a subspecialty.
The conflict over its status has often been bitter. But the two colleges buried the hatchet in 2018 and made a joint application to the Australian Medical Council.
After being signed off as a new subspeciality (the first within general practice) by Ministerial Council, it was added to the official list on Monday.
