Safety study ‘reassuring’ on COVID-19 vax for pregnant women

UK health advisers say expectant mothers can get the vaccine like anyone else, in accordance with their age and clinical risk

Pregnant women in the UK have now joined those in the US in being offered COVID-19 vaccinations following analysis of real-world data showing no safety signals.

Last week, the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) said the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines could be safely administered during pregnancy based on post-market data from the US.

Neither the Pfizer nor the AstraZeneca vaccines are currently recommended for pregnant women in Australia but it can be considered “if the potential benefits outweigh any potential risks”.

The JCVI says its decision to offer the vaccine was informed by US data showing no safety signals in a cohort of 87,000 pregnant women inoculated with one of the two mRNA vaccines.
