Another state is allowing pharmacists with extra training to initiate oral contraceptives, with taxpayer cash to pay for 5000 pharmacist consultations.

The NSW Government announced the change on Wednesday for a 1 June start date, adding that trained pharmacists would also be allowed to resupply medroxyprogesterone acetate injections and the combined hormonal contraceptive ring.

“The truth of the matter is, the contraceptive pill is basic healthcare, and it’s been too difficult for women in our state to access it,” said Premier Chris Minns.

“In some cases, it’s been way too expensive, and for women who have had to fight to get an appointment at an expensive GP, in some cases it’s been prohibitive.”
