‘Self-reflection’ to be mandatory for all doctors from 2023

Doctors across Australia will have to write professional development plans and spend 25 hours reviewing their performance and measuring outcomes to maintain their medical registration from January 2023.

It follows the formal endorsement by federal, state and territory health ministers of new minimum CPD standards drawn up by the Medical Board of Australia.

Doctors with specialist registration will still have to meet the CPD requirements demanded by their respective specialist colleges.

However, each college will have to ensure their requirements include an annual professional development plan and a minimum of 50 hours of CPD activities each year (see box below).
