Genomic sequencing for babies and laws on ‘visiting’ data: the many minefields of widespread genomic testing
The NHS plans to screen the entire genome of every newborn by 2030, in what ministers are hyping up as a healthcare quantum leap.
“This revolution in medical science means that we can transform the NHS over the coming decade, from a service which diagnoses and treats ill-health to one that predicts and prevents it,” said UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting.
In Australia, the Federal Government has appointed Tiffany Boughtwood as the first Health Genomics Commissioner, tasked with co-ordinating public and private work on genomic medicine.
Interestingly, Ms Boughtwood is not an evangelist for collecting every scrap of genomic data available.
