The Victorian Government will not publish the clinical advice behind its decision to let pharmacists initiate the oral contraceptive pill, claiming it is not in the public interest.

The policy, which begins in July, aims to help women avoid the “hassle” of seeing a GP, according to Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.

But the RACGP has denounced it as an attack on the authority of the TGA — which has repeatedly said the pill should remain S4 — that risks women’s safety.

In March, Opposition health spokeswoman Georgie Crozier used a parliamentary motion to force the government to produce all briefings, correspondence and other documents related to medical and safety advice behind the decision.
