Is looking up a patient’s Facebook profile or plugging their name into Google unethical?

A BMJ article on the subject has fired up the debate in the AusDoc comments section, where one GP said it was no different to “peeking into a patient’s shopping trolley after you worked your bum off to control their diabetes”.

But some commentators suggest it is a “breach of public trust” and that doctors do need clearer guidelines on the topic.
