‘Sometimes you just get a miserable diagnosis’: Professor Mary-Louise McLaws

Diagnosed with brain cancer in January, she says she expects the illness will probably end her life

Epidemiologist Professor Mary-Louise McLaws has been a constant during the pandemic, offering a reassuring voice to help Australians through the maelstrom of COVID-19.

But she says it is her turn to be supported after she revealed this week that the brain cancer she was diagnosed with in January will probably claim her life.

“Now all of a sudden the Australian community’s caring for me,” she told ABC News after receiving an Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Referring to the award in an interview with presenter Virginia Trioli, she said: “Sadly, I often don’t feel fabulous for the whole day, but I do think I will today.”
