State government reveals GP payroll tax exemption

The Queensland Government has introduced draft laws to make GPs’ ‘wages’ completely exempt from payroll tax.
After a multi-year saga of state tax collectors trying to levy payroll tax on GPs, the newly elected Crisafulli government has chosen to give GP practices legislated protection from the menacing tax.
The bill, if passed, would mean registered specialist GPs, accredited GP registrars and certain non-specialist doctors would join trade apprentices on a list of workers whose wages are payroll tax exempt.
It would apply to payments from medical practices to GPs retrospectively from 1 December 2024.
