The Tasmanian Government spent hundreds of thousands of dollars over five months to save struggling GP practices, according to documents released to AusDoc.

An FOI request has shown that the government gave direct funding to four practices between January and May 2024 amid Tasmania’s GP closure crisis.

The handouts — totalling $217,859 — were for practices to spend at their discretion.

Former state health minister Guy Barnett said the government had felt compelled to step in “time and time again, over what is becoming an extended period of time”.
