The Queensland Government has extended its ban on the initiation of puberty blockers and hormone treatments for patients with gender dysphoria, ignoring the core recommendation of its own independent expert review.

The ban, originally introduced last year for patients under 18, applies only to the state’s public services, but will now be extended to 2031.

It goes against the advice of the review led by psychiatrist Professor Ruth Vine, which said that treatment decisions “must be informed by each individual’s presentation and circumstances”.

Her report, released a week before Christmas and running to more than 500 pages, argued that with “proper and cautious oversight, standards and appropriate reporting, there can be benefit for a young person in being able to access puberty blockers”.
