States agree: ADHD prescribing rules should be consistent across Australia

Ministers have agreed to back a uniform approach to allow GPs with extra training to prescribe ADHD drugs.

State and territory health ministers have agreed in principle to make ADHD prescribing rules the same across the country.

In the last year, most states and territories have announced changes so GPs with extra training can prescribe ADHD medication to adults, creating a patchwork of rules.

For example, WA GPs can complete training with specialist mentors to initiate treatment, while NSW GPs can take a short online course to renew prescriptions or more extensive training to initiate treatment.

On Friday, the ministers said they had “endorsed the need for national harmonisation of ADHD diagnosis and prescribing practices”, according to their post-meeting communique.
