‘Still no recurrence’: Professor Richard Scolyer celebrates another clear MRI

The world-renowned pathologist reports more positive news of the experimental treatment he is undergoing for his brain tumour.

Professor Richard Scolyer’s latest MRI scan reveals no recurrence of his brain tumour, almost a year after a seizure led to the discovery of a grade 4 glioblastoma.

The 2024 Australian of the Year has been sharing regular social media updates about his progress in using experimental treatments, following his shock diagnosis in June last year.

At the time, scans showed he had a left temporal lobe grade 4 isocitrate dehydrogenase-wildtype, MGMT-unmethylated glioblastoma — a form associated with some of the poorest outcomes — after a sudden seizure while travelling in Poland in May.

He and co-medical director of Melanoma Institute Australia, medical oncologist Professor Georgina Long, decided to sidestep the conventional treatment and adopt the immunotherapy approach they had successfully used with their melanoma patients over the past two decades.
