‘Stuff of nightmares’: Doctor’s alarm after police seize 11kg of pure powdered fentanyl

The prospect of large amounts of fentanyl being introduced to the Australian illicit market is the stuff of “nightmares”, says a leading emergency doctor in the wake of a huge drugs seizure.
Associate Professor David Caldicott was commenting after the Australian Federal Police (AFP) revealed details of an 11kg shipment of the synthetic opioid.
It was found in an industrial wood lathe at the Port of Melbourne in December last year, the AFP revealed on Monday.
The quantity of pure powdered fentanyl was theoretically enough to cause 5.5 million overdose deaths.
