Almost half of the GPs who took part in a US survey on negligence claims report having been sued, with their top regret being that they didn’t do more tests.

Four out of 10 legal claims against the GPs related to a failed or delayed diagnosis, according to the findings from the latest Medscape report on legal action.

The GP data came from a larger study of more than 4300 doctors who were invited to do a short online survey on whether they had been sued, reasons for the lawsuit and how the experience affected their practice.

Failure to diagnose or a delayed diagnosis was the reason for 42% of the actions involving GPs compared with a third of all doctors.
