Surgeon helps out with his own thumb operation

US-based Dr Mohab Foad anaesthetised his hand, then helped a colleague repair the ulnar collateral ligament

A US doctor has taken part in surgery on his own left hand, helping a colleague to repair his torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Cincinnati hand surgeon Dr Mohab Foad hadn’t intended to participate, but once he saw his anaesthetised thumb looking like someone else’s digit on the operating table, he changed his mind.

“It really was a lot like it wasn’t my thumb, it was anybody else’s,” Dr Foad told the Cincinatti Enquirer

The doctor asked for a scalpel, and using his dominant right hand, assisted the surgeon doing the repair.
