Surgeon investigated over ‘potentially inaccurate’ colonoscopies

A surgeon who performed “potentially inaccurate” colonoscopies in the NSW-Victorian border region of Albury-Wodonga has been temporarily banned from practising.Â
Dr Liu-Ming Schmidt remains registered as a doctor but was banned from performing any medical procedures or treating patients under conditions placed on her medical registration on Friday.
Almost 2000 patients who underwent colonoscopies under Dr Schmidt’s care or supervision were told this week they may need to have their procedures repeated.
A panel of experts reviewed Dr Schmidt’s work at Albury-Wodonga Health, Albury-Wodonga Private Hospital and Insight Private Hospital between 2018 to 2022 after one of her colleagues raised concerns in July last year.
