Surgeon’s botched operation made patient’s bowel a ‘closed loop’: UK tribunal
The operation meant the patient's bowel contents were returned to the stomach, a surgeon told the tribunal.
A surgeon who created a closed loop in a patient’s bowel during a botched gastrojejunostomy has been struck off by the UK medical regulator.
The results of Dr Yasser Abdel Rahman’s operation were described as “not compatible with life” during hearings held by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.
One expert witness, a senior general and colorectal surgeon, described the procedure as “bizarre” and “not known to man”.
The botched surgery occurred on 25 August 2020, only a few days after Dr Abdel Rahman, who is from Egypt, had joined the Royal Oldham Hospital as a locum consultant general and colorectal surgeon.
