Two surgeons who allegedly accepted bribes to ensure public hospitals purchased or leased particular equipment have had extensive conditions placed on their AHPRA registration.

Neurosurgeon Dr Richard William Laherty, 53, and orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dihan Taranga Aponso, 45, have been charged with multiple counts of misconduct in public office and official corruption. They first faced Brisbane Magistrates Court in January.

Prosecutors allege they “corruptly received … secret payments from medical device company Medivance in return for using surgical devices supplied by Medivance while performing surgery”, according to court documents.

The documents also allege that Dr Laherty was a part-owner of Medivance between November 2016 and March 2018 and that his investment company received a 20% share of the margin from surgical products supplied by Medivance that he implanted during procedures.
