Tassie unveils GP ADHD training but AMA says it ‘won’t be enough’ without extra funding

The Tasmanian Government promised to expand GPs’ ADHD treatment powers during last year’s election campaign.

The Tasmanian Government has unveiled its training for GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD, with about 50 GPs completing a six-hour in-person training session last week.

GPs who complete both the in-person training and online training modules from the RACGP or ACRRM will be qualified to diagnose and initiate treatment for ADHD in both adults and children, says Tasmanian Health Minister Bridget Archer.

She has flagged that the first GPs are expected to start diagnosing and treating ADHD this month.

“This will be a game changer for Tasmanian families, slashing wait times for assessments, cutting medical costs and ensuring lifelong ADHD care that’s easier to access right across the state,” she said.
