Sleep experts have welcomed the approval of smartwatch technology that can detect potential obstructive sleep apnoea by analysing overnight breathing patterns.

The TGA has for the first time approved smartwatch software from Apple and Samsung to detect night-time breathing disturbances.

The analysis could indicate whether their users show symptoms of moderate to severe sleep apnoea — data they could take to a GP for further guidance.

Queensland sleep physician Dr David Cunnington said it was a useful development as placing more attention on the underdiagnosed condition could prompt patients to seek medical help.
