TGA boss poses as a patient ahead of potential medicinal cannabis crackdown

Most medicinal cannabis products are not assessed for safety, the TGA warns.

The TGA is investigating the potential for restrictions on medicinal cannabis prescribing, such as clamping down on the Special Access Scheme.

With a handful of doctors writing 90 medicinal cannabis scripts per working day, according to AHPRA, the TGA is preparing to consult on the safety risks and the potential for closer oversight.

Doctors’ use of the Special Access Scheme and Authorised Prescribe scheme was a priority concern, the TGA said.

The schemes, which aim to provide access to unapproved drugs as a last resort, are the mechanisms doctors use to prescribe more than 1000 unapproved cannabis products.
