TGA recalls common cold and flu ingredient over anaphylaxis risk

Products containing Andrographis paniculata will not be included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as listed medicines.

A herb found in dozens of complementary cold and flu supplements will no longer be classified as a low-risk ingredient over links to anaphylaxis, including one reported death.

New products containing Andrographis paniculata will not be included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as listed medicines, the TGA says.

For existing supplements, companies were given until mid-October to voluntarily remove the products from the market by recall or not restocking.

“Listed medicines are generally lower-risk products. We have decided that the risk of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis associated with andrographis, cannot be managed well enough under this pathway,” the TGA said in a statement last month.
