TGA warns on serotonin syndrome with bupropion

The syndrome has been reported with concomitant use of serotonergic drugs, prompting an update to product information

Prescribing bupropion-containing products alongside serotonergic agents should be avoided where possible because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome, the TGA warns.

If concomitant treatment is clinically required, doctors have been advised that patients should be observed carefully and given information on potential signs and symptoms.

The medicines watchdog says the product information has been updated on two Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods-registered medicines containing bupropion — Zyban SR and Contrave 8/90 — to include fresh warnings about the adverse effect.

Six cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported up to mid-June, the TGA says.
