This year, medical registration fees for the majority of doctors hit four figures — $1027 a year.

Professor Steve Robson for one was unhappy, describing the fee as “extortionate”.

“You have got $3000 or $4000 in college fees, $50,000 a year for indemnity cover and now you have got over $1000 for AHPRA as the cherry on top,” said Professor Robson, who finished up as AMA president this week.

“We are starting to get into the $60,000-$70,000 range of annual payments for doctors to practise.”
