The case of a VMO who billed $3.5 million highlighted by auditor-general
A VMO who apparently billed $3.5 million in pay has been highlighted in an investigation into the use and alleged abuse of a state government’s VMO payment system.
The NSW Auditor-General’s report released last week into the oversight of VMOs warned there are “significant and persistent weaknesses” in the payment controls being applied.
Some $1.3 billion was spent on VMOs over the previous financial year, with the highest claim for an individual doctor reaching $3.48 million.
The report said that across three years, three of the top five highest-paid VMOs were radiologists working across two local health districts under a non-standard payment arrangement.
