The colourful life and remarkable legacy of Australia’s first TV doctorÂ

He was best known as a celebrity doctor but Dr John Knight was also a prolific author, philanthropist, and a man who shrugged off being scammed out of $51 million by a ‘friend’.
The extraordinary life of the GP who demystified medicine through regular TV and radio appearances under the alias Dr James Wright, is being remembered after he died in his sleep on Sunday, aged 94, a few years shy of his hoped-for 110.
While his television and radio appearances may have made him a household name, Dr Knight lived in the same house in Sydney’s North Ryde for at least 50 years.
He also impacted countless lives through a charity he founded, offering subsidised housing for older people facing financial hardship.
