‘The machine is chewing people up’: GP describes her desperation caring for suicidal patient

The doctor is worried about other patients who may not have an 'angry bulldog' such as her to chase up care

A GP has spoken of her anger at the “goddamned disaster” that is the mental health system, recounting her experience with a facility which discharged her acutely suicidal patient without telling her.  

Her account, which merged a small number of different patients into one story, was posted on Twitter beginning with the words: “I’m tired, a thread.” 

At a time when one leading government advisor – psychiatrist and former Mental Health Commissioner Professor Ian Hickie – has attempted to savage the work done by GPs, she documented the work being done in general practice necessary to stop patients falling through the cracks.
