AHPRA has denied claims it is policing dissent over gender-affirming care after it used emergency powers to ban academic psychiatrist Dr Andrew Amos from talking about gender medicine on social media.

Back in February, Dr Amos was ordered to refrain from posting about gender medicine, gender expression or transgender people and was prevented from returning to direct or indirect clinical work.

Few details of the complaints and the basis of the Medical Board of Australia’s actions have surfaced, largely because of confidentiality provisions.

But some 70 doctors recently signed an open letter condemning both AHPRA and the medical board, declaring “no health professional should lose their livelihood for voicing their opinion”.
