Set up by the Federal Government two years ago, its purpose is patient empowerment and the idea that you can prevent them experiencing ‘bill shock’.

Its value to patients is hotly disputed given the complexities of healthcare funding.

But it attempts to give an indicative idea of the out-of-pocket cost of various procedures and interventions based on doctors’ fees, the subsidies coming from Medicare and, where relevant, the contribution from private health insurers.
