Even though she is married to an Australian, Dr Tessa de Speville has not been offered permanent residency.

When Dr Tessa de Speville came to Australia from Mauritius aged 18, she had no idea of the bureaucratic limbo that awaited.

“My brother was already studying in Australia, so he was researching how to become a permanent resident,” she tells AusDoc.

“All the research was saying, if you spend seven years getting all your degrees, you should be able to apply.”

Dr de Speville studied undergraduate biomedicine at the University of Wollongong on a student visa and then worked towards her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne.
