Australia’s voluntary euthanasia system in numbers

Go Gentle Australia's latest report says some 14,700 terminally ill patients have died through VAD since 2019.

The embrace of voluntary assisted dying as an option for terminally ill patients has been rapid.

With the NT potentially about to adopt its own laws, voluntary assisted dying (VAD) could soon be legal in every state and territory in Australia.

But how many people are dying? To what extent are doctors administering the lethal drugs? And what are the reasons that patients offer for ending their lives through VAD?

The advocacy Go Gentle Australia has released its latest report, called 2026 State of VAD, which answers these questions and more.
