These three graphs show public hospitals are in crisis

The AMA's latest Public Hospital Report Card has found that NSW is the best-performing state across all indicators.

The proportion of patients discharged or admitted from ED within four hours of presenting is the lowest on record, the AMA is warning.

Barely 53% of patients across all triage categories met the national four-hour benchmark in 2024/25, compared with 73% just nine years earlier, according to the AMA’s 2026 Public Hospital Report Card.

“No jurisdiction completed more than 61% of their ED presentations within four hours,” the report card said.

“Four years prior, all but two jurisdictions completed more than 61% of presentations within four hours.”
