Time-restricted eating and calorie restriction lead to a similar amount of weight loss over a year, according to a US study.

Researchers did a 12-month randomised controlled trial involving 90 adults with obesity who were randomly assigned to three groups.

The groups were: an eight-hour time-restricted eating group (eating between noon and 8pm only, without calorie counting); calorie restriction group (25% energy restriction daily); or a control group (eating over a period of 10 or more hours per day).

The study was completed by 77 adults with a mean age of 40, say the authors from the University of Illinois Chicago , led by dietitian Shuhao Lin.
