Toddler developed mercury toxicity after GP prescribed his homemade merbromin cream: tribunal

The GP was found guilty of professional misconduct over his treatment of three patients, including two children.

A GP who prescribed homemade merbromin-based eczema cream to thousands of patients, including a toddler who developed mercury toxicity, has been found guilty of professional misconduct.

Known as Clark Compound or CC cream, the unapproved treatment contained the mercury salt-based antiseptic merbromin — sold commercially as Mercurochrome — plus terbinafine hydrochloride and subtherapeutic levels of steroid, the tribunal heard.

The GP, who gained fellowship in 1998, had compounded the cream within his consulting rooms since 2000, said the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

It said he prescribed the cream to about 90% of his patients with skin conditions.
