A man developed kidney failure after taking up to 12 times the daily recommended dose of vitamin D on the advice of a naturopath, Canadian doctors report.

The 54-year-old was urgently referred to the nephrology clinic at Toronto Hospital with a creatinine level of 376μmol/L and suspected acute kidney injury, they write in the CMAJ.

The man was being managed by his GP, who first discontinued his antihypertensive and diuretic medication after his baseline creatinine level increased from 100μmol/L to 132μmol/L.

The GP was working on the premise the man had extracellular fluid depletion from heat exposure after a two-week holiday where he sunbathed for 6-8 hours per day.
