Top docs warn of ED crisis with one in three JMO roles unfilled
Emergency doctors are increasingly worried about ED staff shortages, with a survey showing one in three junior doctor roles will be unfilled this year.Â
The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) says its survey reveals large numbers of medical positions in EDs nationwide are vacant for the year ahead.
A poll of directors of ACEM-accredited EDs shows 28% of specialist trainee roles, 30% of junior medical officer roles and 10% of senior decision-maker roles are unfilled across the country.
In rural areas the situation is even worse, where ED heads report 85% of specialist trainee positions, 66% of junior medical officer roles and 22% of senior decision-maker roles are vacant.
